DEVO 05

The Pain of Pruning

Have you ever pruned a plant and thought afterwards “Did I prune too much? Is it going to die?”

Often times when we go through the pruning process it leads to pain that we can ignorantly mislabel as an attack of the enemy…

I know this week has a lot of scripture compared to the other devotionals but it’s not something we can scale down to one verse with this topic, let’s read below what Jesus says about pruning.

John 15:1-8

‘ “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. ‘

If you have been feeling like everything is falling apart and maybe everyone is leaving your life. Maybe there is a chance that it’s not the enemy attacking you but in fact it’s the Father cutting back the branches of the old man you once were. The branches that were bearing bad fruit or now dead fruit!

When we are growing in our walk with the Lord it will feel painful at times as He has to cut away that which once held us captive to sin. That could be people, places, jobs, housing etc. Don’t resist when this takes place! Trust the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you through it and trust that on the other side of it will be LIFE and FRESH FRUIT that says you are now producing fruit from the branches connected to your Heavenly Father.

‘ “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. ‘
Luke 6:43-44

Father, in the name of Jesus, I repent for calling evil what is coming from You as You are changing me and making me into Your image. You said I was a new creation when I came into Your Kingdom, my old man is dead. So, thank You for pruning the old away and making room for the new fruit that will point everything I do to You. Help me to understand that while it may feel like I am losing everything, in fact I am gaining that which You created me to accomplish. In Jesus name, amen.
